t began with a simple question, “Hey, do you guyswant to start a movie and game review podcast?”And just like that, the Club XP Podcast was born.
Arthur pulled the sword from the stone, Spidermanwas unwittingly bitten by a radioactive spider, andHarry Potter was marked with a scar. All heroes havetheir origin story, and like them, our podcast too camefrom humble beginnings.
Like all origin stories, there would be challenges
standing in the way. And our challenges? We are four
guys in our thirties who are married, working full time,
living apart from each other (one on another conti-
nent), and had a total of eleven kids between us. Our
greatest foe was not a grotesque monster or someone seek-
ing world domination. No, our greatest adversary was time.
We needed guidance on where to begin and how to maximizethe time we did have. What tools would we need to make thisidea a reality?
Even with these challenges, we managed to launch thepodcast, and it’s growing daily. It evolved from a simple “yes”to an actual working podcast. It has now become a fortressof solitude, a Batcave amid an ever-dark Gotham City, and aplace of fellowship where we bring dreams to fruition. For our podcast hostingneeds, we chose Spotify’sAnchor service. That meanswe were able to host theaudio for our show, generate a feed, and publish it tomost popular podcastingplatforms for free. Anchorallowed us to have accessto baseline statistics, suchas how many listens anddownloads we have ondifferent platforms.
While the free hosting service was exactly what we needed, we did have mixed experiences with some features of theapp. For example, the group recording feature had delayed audio, a bad connection, and even booted us during one of oursessions. If a group of podcasters is recording remotely andsomething goes wrong, it has the potential to ruin the entireepisode. In addition, the editing features of the app lacks basicmixing controls, so we have not dabbled with it. Overall, while
