Find Synonyms for Words Using
Lookup
Apple’s Lookup feature lets you
press and hold a word to discover its
definition and other relevant information. Now with iOS 12, you can also
find synonyms for words by enabling
a new thesaurus option. Just go
to Settings > General > Dictionary.
From there tap the American English
thesaurus option. Now when you
use Lookup for words, you’ll find thesaurus results as well as a definition.
Older iPhones Get the Trackpad
Tool
A feature I love on 3D Touch-enabled iPhones is that you can hard
press and hold to turn your keyboard
into a trackpad, which then lets you
move your cursor wherever you
want. Now with iOS 12, you get this
feature on older iPhones. Just press
and hold the space bar until the
keyboard turns gray, then slide your
finger over the keyboard likes it’s a
trackpad, and release when you’ve
placed the cursor where you want it.
iPhone XS Gestures
Come to iPad
With iOS 12, Apple
made significant chang-
es to how we navigate
the iPad, which work
whether you own a
model with Touch ID
or Face ID. Instead of
pressing the Home but-
ton, you can now swipe
up from the bottom of
your iPad display to get
from the Lock screen
to the Home screen.
From there, you swipe
up halfway to access
the app switcher. To
access the Control Center, you now swipe down from the
right corner, and you’ll notice that in the app switcher, you’ll
no longer see the Control Center there.
Set Voice Memos to Lossless
Aside from new iCloud sync capabilities and a brand-new app for
the iPad, Voice Memos also allows
you to set audio quality to Lossless
for music recording and high-quality
audio production. To set your audio quality, open the Settings app,
navigate to Voice Memos, and tap
Audio Quality to choose between
Compressed and Lossless. If you’re
recording music or a professional
interview, choose Lossless for high-er-quality sound. Just know that
Lossless will take up more space,
but that shouldn’t be a problem if
you don’t record often or if you have
a paid iCloud storage plan.
Record Over Sections of Voice
Memos
With iOS 12, you can now record
over sections of a voice memo. As in
the past, you tap the big red button
to record. To edit, tap the three-dot
icon and tap Edit, or swipe left on
the recording and tap the gray three-dot icon. From here you can duplicate your recording or tap the Edit
Recording option. When editing, as
before, you’ll find trim tools that let
you cut out unnecessary segments
from the beginning and end, and
you’ll also find a new Replace option
that lets you record over sections of
the original recording.
Update Your Software
Automatically
Keeping your version of iOS up
to date is a great way to avoid any
vulnerabilities and bugs that Apple
discovers in its mobile software.
Now you can enable automatic updates so you don’t have to manage
the process manually. To do this, go
to Settings > General > Software
Update. You’ll find a new toggle that
lets you update to new versions of
iOS automatically when your device
is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi.
