VSCO: VSCO is a more nuanced version of Instagram with
a strong community of creators, large library of presets/
filters, enhanced creative tools, educational content, and
photo journals from artists who have a similar style to me.
Acast: This Swedish company makes the best podcasting
app. It provides more detailed descriptions and rich media
content from your favorite shows (photos, videos, links),
and lets you save or download episodes to listen to later.
Instapaper: I stumble upon so many interesting articles,
especially from journalists on Twitter, but I don’t always
have time to read them right away. Instapaper lets me
save articles to read offline during my underground com-
mute and archive them in case I want to revisit them in the future.
Quartz: This is my favorite news app, which curates stories that are both timely and global. It’s an ongoing conversation about the news, kind of like a text message thread,
where journalists send you messages, photos, GIFs, links,
and 3D objects that you can view in augmented reality.
theSkimm: This app sends me daily news summaries to
help me stay informed about everything happening in the
world. Its team is my source for all things culture, sending
me push notifications every Friday with recommendations
on what to watch, listen to, download, and read over the weekend.
Foursquare Swarm: This is a companion app to Foursquare
(the better Yelp), where you can check into all the places
you’ve been. It’s become like a lifelog for me, where I can
see the full breadth of all the places that I’ve ever visited,
and memories from prior check-ins.
Google Photos: This app not only gives you free storage
for all your photos and videos, but it automatically edits
your photos, generates collages, creates GIFs, and stitch-
es together panoramas—all algorithmically! It’s the best
photo assistant I’ve ever had.
